Passkeys explained: what they are and how to switch

Passkeys replace passwords with a secure key on your phone. Setting one up takes a minute.

A passkey is a pair of keys. The private one stays on your device. The public one is stored by the website. When you sign in, your phone proves it holds the private key, usually by checking your fingerprint or face.

You cannot give a passkey away to a fake site, which is why they stop phishing.

How to switch

  1. Open the account security page.
  2. Choose "Create a passkey".
  3. Confirm with your fingerprint or screen lock.
  4. Keep your password until you have tested the passkey on a second device.

This is a demo story: every name, place, organisation and figure in it is fictional.
